Water Activities

Being on the beautiful River Nene, guests have often brought along their own stand-up paddleboards (SUP), kayaks (single and double), and open canoes to launch off our river bank.  We have around 3 miles of water between us and the next lock along which to enjoy being active on the water.

Within a 10 minute drive from us is the Nene Park Trust.  Nene Park is a large area of park land to the west of Peterborough and is the region's favourite place to get outdoors and enjoy nature. It is made up of six different areas: Ferry MeadowsOrton MeadowsOrton MereWoodston ReachThorpe Meadows and The Rural Estate made up of parkland, meadows, woodlands and lakes such as Gunwade Lake (water sports activities).

Additionally, you can embark on a relaxing wildlife boat trip around Overton Lake on our electric passenger boat "Wyndham," where you can spot fascinating wildlife like swans, herons, and even otters.

The River Nene runs through all the areas connecting them together.

Historical Explorations

Water Newton, known as Durobrivae, was a significant Roman settlement recognized for its thriving pottery production in the late 2nd century AD. This industrial center is noted in the Antonine Itinerary, highlighting its role as a vital stop along a major Roman route north. The discovery of the Water Newton Treasure, a collection of early Christian silver artifacts from the 3rd or 4th century AD, now housed in The British Museum with a copy in the Peterborough Museum, further emphasizes its historical importance.

Nearby, Peterborough served as a fortified garrison town, with a large Roman fort at Longthorpe and notable ceramic production, particularly of Nene Valley Ware.

We have significant Tudor history in our area too as Peterborough Cathedral houses the remains of Katherine of Aragon, and the village of Fotheringhay nearby is where Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded on the 8th February, 1587 following her trail and conviction of treason and plotting the downfall of Elizabeth I.
